Posts on Whether Jesus Was Wealthy

Apparently there has been a recent magazine article on whether or not Jesus was actually wealthy.  I’m with James McGrath on this one.  I doubt that Jesus would have pronounced such harsh woes on the rich if he had been wealthy.  But, you can check out the posts HERE (James McGrath) and HERE (Joel Watts).  I’ll keep you posted as others respond.

Mark Goodacre on Comedy in the Gospels

HERE is an interesting post by Mark Goodacre on humor in the Gospels and how it is often lost on modern readers who do not know how the audience reacted.  If nothing else, I think at least one sentence in the post is quotable, and I will try to remember.  Mark states:

Unfortunately, the narrator never chips in with a little “And the crowd were amused by his teaching, for he taught them with humour, not like their comedians.” If only.

If you missed the play here dealing with the word “amused,” it is on statements like the one found in Matthew 7.28-29 (“28 When Jesus had finished these words, the crowds were amazed at His teaching; 29 for He was teaching them as one having authority, and not as their scribes”).  And, I think that is very clever.
